The request to proceed anonymously is denied. Rule 10(a) expressly provides that the "title of the complaint must name all the parties." See Fed. R. Civ. P. 10(a). The duty to disclose one's identity is no trifling matter, as the Seventh Circuit has repeatedly explained. "We have repeatedly voiced our disfavor of parties proceeding anonymously, as anonymous litigation runs contrary to the rights of the public to have open judicial proceedings and to know who is using court facilities and procedures funded by public taxes. To proceed anonymously, a party must demonstrate 'exceptional circumstances' that outweigh both the public policy in favor of identified parties and the prejudice to the opposing party that would result from anonymity." Doe v. Village of Deerfield, 819 F.3d 372, 37677 (7th Cir. 2016) (citation omitted); see also Doe v. Smith, 429 F.3d 706, 710 (7th Cir. 2005) ("[T]his circuit's decisions. disfavor anonymous litigation. The public has an interest in knowing what the judicial system is doing, an interest frustrated when any part of litigation is conducted in secret."); Doe v. Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin, 112 F.3d 869, 872 (7th Cir. 1997) ("Identifying the parties to the proceeding is an important dimension of publicness. The people have a right to know who is using their courts."); In re Boeing 737 Max Pilots Litig., 2020 WL 247404, at *1 (N.D. Ill. 2020) ("The duty to self-identify is a small part of a much bigger tradition of transparency in federal court. The public has a legitimate interest in the facts of a lawsuit, and the most basic fact is who is suing whom."). This case is a run-of-the-mill trademark case about foreign counterfeiters, like dozens if not hundreds of other cases in the courthouse. The situation is routine, not exceptional. The complaint (Dckt. No. 1) is hereby stricken. The Court grants Plaintiff leave to file an amended complaint that discloses its true name by May 7, 2021. The request to file the documents under seal is granted. Mailed notice.
